In this article, I will share my findings I got from the internet on the benefits of RIA and also why we eventually chose to develop the product towards this direction.
The term rich internet application (RIA) describes the new category of applications that bridge the client and internet cloud. They have come about as a means of solving the “rich versus reach” conundrum, enabling internet applications to be both rich in in functionality and engaging to use, yet able to take full advantage of the internet reach, connectivity and deployment model.
Let start from the business benefits. RIA can make customer interactions compelling, dynamic, and useful – in a word engaging. Engagement is also critical to transforming customers into active advocates for brands and businesses; 79% of respondents from a survey said that engaged customers will recommend product and services to other. When the RIA is done well, customer satisfaction will go up and more people make it through the progress.
RIA enable new classes of enterprise application that can greatly improve the access to the data stored within the organisation, helping employees to better understand and use that data and to support their working practices in richer, more interactive and more intuitive ways. The outcome of this is not only increased levels of employee productivity and effectiveness; it can also be the differentiator needed to achieve competitive success, business innovation and operational excellence.
The reason using RIA in a site is because pages are generally dumb. RIA brings interactivity to the web where it makes it easy to complete a task due to its intuitiveness, leading to a richer user experience.
Workforce may be better connected and exposed to the flexibility and mobility of applications at home and on their personal handheld devices than they are at work.
It also gives the ability to effectively consume, interpret, and create data and the capacity to communicate flexibly to key audiences (for example, your employees, supply chain, and consumers) can differentiate your company from your competitors
When RIA is deployed on the desktop, it can be cached locally, allowing users to work when connected or disconnected from the network. This allows people to continue working on the tasks even without an internet connection.
All the above mentioned points lead us to the decision in developing our product as a rich internet application because our philosophy emphasises a lot on user experience and this is one platform which can help us to deliver this.
